For the next 13 years, Rose Bowl stadium featured the chariot race instead of the football game.

If you have ever wonder why something so testosterone driven like a college football name is named after a flower, here is how it all happened.

The idea for the game originated as part of the proposal made by Professor Charles F. Holder, at the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena . Professor Holder wanted to hold a festival to show the rest of the world how they had their roses in full bloom even when the rest of the country was buried in snow. This was the start of “The Tournament of Roses” way back in 1890. It featured flower-covered floats, foot races, polo matches and games such as tug-of-war for entertainment.

Over the next few years, the tournament grew to expand several other activities such as marching bands, horseback riders and also a football game which later came to be known as the Rose Bowl.

The Rose Bowl games are usually held on the New Years Day, except if it falls on a Sunday. Then it is held on the 2 nd of January, Monday. 13 years after the first Rose Bowl, the officials restarted the post season college football game.

The Rose Bowl football game grew in fame and to accommodate the growing number of fans, the Tournament of Roses officials decided to build a new stadium. The stadium was constructed with a design similar to that of the Yale Bowl which was were the game was then played. The Rose Bowl Stadium opened in 1923 and ever since the Rose Bowl has been held at the stadium.
